Risk and Safety

Adventure-based work involves deliberate, managed risk. Healthy risk taking is part of the therapeutic model; unmanaged risk is not. Here is how we keep sessions safe without taking the adventure out of them.

Before any session runs

Every activity type has a current written risk assessment before it is used with participants, covering the location, the activity, weather, supervision, equipment and emergency access. Risk assessments are participant aware: the same trail is a different risk for a confident 17 year old than for an anxious 11 year old, and we adjust for the person in front of us. No session proceeds without completed medical information, signed consent, a risk acknowledgement and an emergency contact.

Weather and the backup plan

Weather is checked before every outdoor session and a backup activity is always planned. Heat, storms, high wind, heavy recent rain and fire danger ratings can each trigger the backup plan. The decision tree is simple: proceed, modify, postpone or cancel. Modifying or cancelling for safety is good practice, never a failure, and conditions are reassessed continuously during the session.

Challenge by Choice

Participants set their own limits. Anyone can opt out of any activity at any time, and that choice is respected and worked with therapeutically. Workers can also stop any activity at any time.

If something goes wrong

Every worker holds a current first aid certificate and carries a first aid kit on sessions. Emergency priorities are people first, then communication, then everything else: remove people from danger, provide first aid, call 000, contact the participant's emergency contact and the Director. Every session plan identifies the nearest road access point and evacuation route for its specific location, and incidents are recorded, reviewed and used to improve the next session. SNDY Tracks holds public liability insurance covering its activities.
